Skin Types
In today’s modern era, many people are facing environmental, physical and mental challenges in our day to day lives. This has a negative effect on our health including skin health. Because of increased stress levels, exposure to UV radiation due to ozone depletion, global warming and inappropriate lifestyle it is quintessential that we take care of our skin’s health as a part of healthy lifestyle.
But, how will you do it? With a plethora of skincare products, it is difficult to select which type of skincare products must be used. For that you must first know what is your skin type.
Is it oily, dry, sensitive, resistant, pigmented or normal? There is a way to find out your skin type.
Lislie Baumann designed an innovative approach to classify skin type, the Baumann Skin Type Indicator (BSTI), into 4 dichotomous parameters to characterize facial skin types:
Dry or Oily
Sensitive or Resistant
Pigmented or Nonpigmented
Wrinkled or Unwrinkled (tight)
Evaluating skin based on all four parameters yields 16 potential skin-type permutations. The skin type is determined by a 64-item questionnaire that is designed to determine baseline skin type identifications and assessments after significant life changes.
IMPORTANT: Skin types are not fixed. It can change and the change is dependent on many factors like moving to a different climate or experiencing marked stress fluctuations, pregnancy, menopause, or other significant exogenous and endogenous events. But, if we keep all other conditions static, the questionnaire will tell you your skin type as per the table below.
The attached questionnaire will give you an idea about your skin type but, for further confirmation on your skin type and what products should be used to treat/maintain it, please consult your dermatologist.
